Carrie Burns Brown-Collage/Acrylic - October 4-8
COST: $330.00

Carrie Burns Brown's collages reflect nature as seen, felt, and interpreted by the artist. Nature is the foundation of her collages. "Nature expresses herself through forms, patterns, shapes, color, and texture," she says. Brown's collages, which are better described as "land shapes" rather than landscapes, are glorious montages and constructions that reflect her unerring sense of color and design. The primary focus of Carrie's experimental watermedia collage workshop will be to explore the possibilities of application of many different collage papers and their interaction with acrylic paints. The first two days of the workshop will focus on color and design using fluid acrylic paint as a multilayered, transparent, opaque water medium which can be applied to canvas or paper. There will be an introduction to collage transfers and collage techniques tailored to the development of the students.

Carrie has taught workshops extensively across the country, including twenty years at the Greenville Museum of Art and eight years at the White Rock Summer School of the Arts in Canada. Currently, she is on the progressive staff of Springmaid Beach Workshop in South Carolina where she has been since 1985.

Mary Ann Beckwith-Watercolor - May 3-7
Dee Casstevens-Stained Glass - June 22-24
Carrie Burns Brown-Collage/Acrylic - October 4-8

Mary Ann Beckwith-Watercolor - May 3-7
COST: $320.00

Mary Ann Beckwith has taught watercolor, drawing, and design at Michigan Technological University helping engineers- and scientists-to-be exercise both sides of their brains since 1973. Ms. Beckwith received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1996 and again in 2003. She was also a finalist in 1997 and 2000.

She is a full time watercolor artist and revels in sharing her tried and true methods of painting as well as her explorations into uncharted artistic territories. Mary Ann’s book, Creative Watercolor: A Step by Step Guide and Showcase (1996) was sold in this country and recently translated for the Japanese market. She has taught her workshop on “Experimental Watercolor” throughout this country and in Canada. In 1996 she traveled to Korea where she taught watercolor techniques at Seoul National University and at Kon Ku University.

Recently inducted into the National Watercolor Society, she is a signature member of the Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Midwest Watercolor Societies and is a Nautilus Fellow in the Society of Experimental Artists. She has served as president and National Show chair for the Midwest Watercolor Society. She has also served as a judge in shows around the country.

The heart of the workshop will be to develop a strong sense of style in water media and mixed media while emphasizing the creative approach to making images. New tools will be constructed from commonly found elements and materials. For example, through exposure to the various, new materials and techniques each workshop attendee will find themselves better expressing their individual ideas and visions in their work. Demonstrations focus on composition and design, sources of inspiration, how to recharge your work, and the business of being an artist. The methods taught are suitable for both representational and abstract images.

Finally, throughout the workshop the business of being an artist, including setting goals and priorities will be discussed. Each participant will discover how to become "inspired" and how to network as an artist.

Each day’s schedule will allow for plenty of painting time. This workshop promises to be lively, energetic and best of all fun filled!
